concept
Night Street in Daman was envisioned as a vibrant coastal promenade that transforms a typical vehicular road into a lively public spine connecting the town to the beach. The idea was to reinterpret the street as an evening destination—one that celebrates movement, light, and the character of the surrounding architecture. Drawing cues from the local built fabric, the intervention extends beyond the street surface to include the visual identity of the buildings, which were repainted to echo the architectural language of Daman. The street culminates in a focal moment near the beach where a boat-inspired sculptural installation anchors the axis, subtly referencing the city’s maritime culture. The design approach focuses on creating a balanced urban environment where pedestrians, vehicles, leisure activities, and social life coexist comfortably, turning the corridor into a well-ordered yet animated public realm that becomes most alive after sunset.
design
The street is structured through a clear hierarchy of movement and spaces, ensuring both functionality and comfort. Defined walkways run along both sides, finished in Kota stone and separated from the vehicular zone through Vyara kerbing, establishing a distinct pedestrian edge. The carriageway is paved with multi-toned paver blocks arranged in patterns inspired by Daman’s architectural motifs, giving the street a recognizable visual identity. Bay parking areas are integrated along the edges to organize vehicular movement without disturbing pedestrian circulation. Seating pockets, precast planters, and shaded resting zones are distributed along the street, creating small pauses within the urban flow. A play area introduces activity for younger users, while low-maintenance native planting softens the hardscape. Carefully designed lighting—featuring sculptural pole fixtures and suspended illuminated spheres—defines the street’s nighttime character. Integrated drainage systems ensure efficient water management, making the streetscape both durable and easy to maintain while maintaining a lively and welcoming urban atmosphere.
